Anyway, I agree totally that everyone needs at least one good dog in their life at some point. There were no other children in the neighborhood I grew up in, so my dog and I roamed the woods and fields behind the house for years until she could no longer 'roam.' I think one of the things I love about dogs is that companionable silence. They stretch out and sleep or just lie (lay? lie?) there, but they're happy just being there with you. I've looked at our library for the book you suggested-currently checked out but I'll read it when it comes back. Have you ever read "The Dog Who Wouldn't Be"? Marvelous tribute to faithful canines.Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12534602761236401559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5578299375433383985.post-33622879840299687592009-08-30T16:10:48.728-07:002009-08-30T16:10:48.728-07:00Oh so well said. Whe...Oh so well said. And your title says it all.

When my children were very small, my husband (a forester) came home with a puppy someone had left out in the woods. She grew up with my children and she was the best friend ever for them. I spanked her hindparts once for running out into the road chasing cars. I never did that again. Her look when I did that haunts me right now.

She was a small, very mixed breed and the cutest, best dog anyone ever had (pretty much how you feel, right?). One of the saddest days in our family was when she became so old and sick she had to be put to sleep. I couldn't go. My husband and youngest daughter went. We've not had a dog since then. I don't think another one could live up to her.

Thank you for the post. It is a memorial to good dawgs everywhere.Mamafamiliashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04642279230675116567noreply@blogger.com
